Low quality rendering in LibreOffice on Linux

I feel like this should be a very common complaint, but it seems that few people have the same experience as me. I’ve used LibreOffice for years, and though it is a wonderful suite of applications, it has always been a disappointment in terms of UI and font rendering. It is the only application that I use on my Ubuntu system that can’t seem to cleanly display fonts and other elements. I have tried all the antialiasing tricks, wiped my configuration, etc., etc. Nothing has worked, and as so few people seem to have reported this issue, I can only conclude that there’s something about my system that needs fixing.

I’ll provide a few examples. Here is the About dialog:

Does the logo look okay to you? Is that what you see on your system?

To me, the kerning and antialiasing in LibreOffice is all over the place. Look at the two 'f’s in “LibreOffice”. On my system it looks awful!

Like I said, LibreOffice is the only application that looks so bad. If someone could tell me how I can fix it, I would be very grateful!

I can only add one attachment as a new user, so I’ll follow up with a second example in a separate post.

And here is a comparison between LibreOffice Writer and Inkscape (selected purely for convenience):

I can’t help you with your question but I can say that your screenshot showed the wrong part of the About LibreOffice dialogue, see This is the guide - How to use the Ask site? - #3 by Hrbrgr

Thanks, Earnest AI, nope I left in exactly what I wanted to show, which was the horrible rendering of the LibreOffice logo.

I did actually manage to fix that one - I had turned off antialiasing and forgot to turn it back on again.

Please note that even with antialiasing on, the issue with font rendering remains on. For example:

Calibri isn’t the only font that shows this issue, but it’s fairly common and hopefully easy to reproduce.

For reference, system is running Ubuntu 24.10, and display is 49" at 5120x1440 pixels (equivalent to two 2K screens side by side), with 100% scaling, attached to an NVIDIA 3090 running with NVIDIA native drivers.

As before, here’s Inkscape with the same text (at 100%)

If I change the Zoom level in Writer, there is progressive improvements, but the I have to zoom 200% for all lines to look okay.

And your LibreOffice version details?

Do you confirm this data? In this case your pixels are rectangular with ration 2:1 (height vs. width). Isn’t the specification 5120×2880?

Calibri was created for Microsoft as a ClearType font. I have no idea how ClearType differs from TrueType. I think M$ uses floating point for rendering while LO is based on integer arithmetics. Could it be enough to explain the artefacts?
