Maintaining row height when sorting data in Calc

Extensive data in Calc with text wrapping of some cells. Row height adjusted to suit, but this does not move with data when sorted. Can it be done?

Wrap text automatically is a cell format setting. When sorting it should be correctly moved together with the cell content if the sort option Include formats is enabled.

Thanks for this. As I have written elsewhere, it is checked (by default?) in the Sort Options dialogue. I edited the spreadsheet (large by my standards) to put a blank single line above an example with live data with one of its 10 cells containing wrapped text. (I apply the wrapping to the specific cell, not the complete row (might this be the problem?), which then takes two lines. Resorted the sheet, the blank line moved, with the sample line moving down where it is not needed. So I would welcome your further thoughts

Lots of words. Little reliability concerning my understanding. Wasted time.

I didn’t excpect you to upload your original spreadsheet, but reduced example sheets showing what I asked for to be sure to understand.
I’m not a native speaker of English, and I won’t waste additional time with guessing how, exactly, your words are meant.

I did not see your request for specific examples before writing the response you have struggled with. Moreover I am not an experienced user of ask LO and have not seen the Reply option, nor identified upload, until looking further to write this. Let it go.

Do not use row height to adjust cells based on text. Row height sets the height of a specific row, that is what it is there for. As @Lupp says, format the cell with Format>Cells…>Alignment>Wrap text automatically.

If you already have a mess, then

  1. Select your data table and format it as just mentioned above.
  2. select all the affected rows at the left (the row numbers), right click, and chose Optimal Height… then press Ok.

LO 7.2.5 has some quirks about line wrapping, but by doing this formatting I cannot get 7.2 to create any unexpected behavior, even if I include an extra blank row in the sort that is not formatted for auto-wrapping. Note that blank cells sort to the bottom. But wherever it ends up, it will have the row height of that row unless you reset the height somehow.

Don’t worry!
I just didn’t feel able to answer the question in a useful way based on my incomplete understanding. Somebody else can do it, hopefully. .

Thank you Joshua 4. I’ve just come back to this.

I think a combination of selecting whole spreadsheet (about 1000 rows x 10 cols and applying Format > Cells should lock it for the existing records. Additional data, usually added a few rows at a time, can be dealt in groups without using the toolbar in my usual way.

Checked formatting of a sample cell/row. Include formatting option on. Inserted blank row above the sample and resorted. Blank row moved but sample row not reduced to single line. Be glad of further thoughts.

Oops - typos: Sample row “now” reduced to single line.

How should I understand this?
Please supply an examle sheet showing the issue for you. Include what you have, what you got by your attempted sorting, and what you wanted/expected to get. Best use three clearly named sheets for the three parts. Edit your question and use the Upload tool for the purpose.
