New Install acting strange [after reboot, LO says the file is corrupted]

My desktop died and I bought a refurbished laptop from someone. He buys them in lots, cleans them up, and sells them. Anyway, he pre-installs LibreOffice on all of them. But I have a problem.

I downloaded my projects (mostly all Writer files) and have been using those. Any time I do a reboot, LO says the file is corrupted. Most of the time it can recover, sometimes not. It first happened when I used an extension called “multi save” which saves the document in both odt and docx. So I removed that extension yet it continues to happen.

No, it is not the same document. It has so far happened to both active project documents.

Yes, I do both Autosave and Auto recovery. I also save backups.

I typically save in odt all the time then do a docx whenever I think of it. I am a writer and my editor is a MSOffice junkie, bless her heart.

So my question is, should I do an clean uninstall and clean reinstall to see if that resolves issues? If so, will using the control panel uninstall be enough or are there folders I should locate and delete after?

Windows 11 (dead desktop was Win 10 if that makes a difference) LO version 24.8.2.3.

Do you close LibreOffice before shutting down? If Windows is closed while LibreOffice has files open, there is insufficient time for LibreOffice to close the files properly.

My personal preference is, never trust a single bit of pre-installed software on any box I get, even a stock from manufacturer. The first thing I do is format disks and reinstall operating system, then the software I need. I never know what was their skills, install set, use of the box by passing-by customers when shelved in the shop… Indeed - that is my own professional deformation.

Definitely reinstall. And use the already-released 24.8.3 bugfix release - when you will install it, it would automatically reinstall, you don’t even need to use control panel. And reset the user profile. Then you won’t need any other cleanup operations.

Yes, LO is closed before shutting down. I do not have the QuickLoad going on this computer. I save the document, close down LO, then close the lid which goes into sleep mode after a few hours if plugged in. I do a hard boot every other night. And a restart if I install new software.

I will look up where to find the bugfix release. So if I download that and install it, I don’t have to uninstall the current version? 24.8.2.3?

Okay, found the new release. I thought I had checked for updates via the program before I asked the question.

If LibreOffice tries to recover the same file each time you start, then after it has recovered the file click File > Save As and save it as a different name. The next time it asks to recover the same file, just cancel the recovery.
.
If it asks to recover different files each time, then LibreOffice isn’t shutting down properly. Uninstalling and reinstalling will fix any problem in the programme. You can uninstall by right-clicking LibreOffice in the Start Menu and selecting Uninstall.
Resetting your LibreOffice user profile will remove any corruption that might be affecting it. I suggest the Manual method of renaming the folder and then after the new profile has been created, close LibreOffice and in File explorer drag the contents of needed folders into the newly created ones. Read the whole user profile page carefully before starting.

It isn’t a bug in LibreOffice but of the setup/operation/corruption in your computer.

The default for Power off in Windows 11 is hibernate. Only Start menu > Power > Restart reliably reboots Windows, unless you have turned off FastStart

I did the reinstall with the latest version from the website (which was the version I already had). I am about to take a business trip and will test it while gone. If I have a minute while gone, I’ll report back.

I never turn off a computer by just using the power button. I always use the start>power>restart or off option. And I only referred to the download as a bugfix because another commenter had. I figured it was a problem on my end, not a bug with LO.

I also have not put any of the extensions I use back in. I had tried to remove each one and see if it happened but it made no difference.

And yes, it is different files.
