New To LibreOffice and Really Struggling

Hi all, just started using LibreOffice and have a problem. I have a file with all my MS Word Docs in it and one with All my MS Excel files. When I open Writer and tell it to use the Word Docs file it does but when I open Calc and tell it to use the Excel file it does. Here is the problem, when I go back to Writer it has changed it’s self and is now looking in the Excel file.

It is like both programs can only look in one file. Is there any way to tell Writer to open files from THIS file and Calc to open files from THAT file? I have also tried combining ALL the files into a separate folder but Writer sees it’s files and Calc wants to open the same Writer files. Surly, I am missing something somewhere. Thanks in advance. Please mention your version of LibreOffice and your Operating System, both can be obtained by copying the info in Help > About.
In case you have a release 7.5 or older, first upgrade to the latest release to see whether it solves your problem.

From your nebulous question, I understand your files are segregated in different directories (or folders when using the desktop metaphor). Though Writer and Calc may look as different applications, they are in fact frontends to the same core. Thus, the file dialog opens to the last recently used directory. There is nothing you can do against this.

BUT, most current OSes (you didn’t mention yours) allow you to customise the dialog and add “preferred locations” in addition to built-in home directory, desktop or default documents (Documents or My Documents depending on OS). Use this feature to drag and drop a directory/folder from the scrollable file list to the preferred loactions area, generally at top left of the dialog.

Then you click first on the preferred loacation to point the scrolling list to this directory.

Thank you for your help. I am running Win 10 with LibreOffice 7.6.4.1. I am still a bit confused on the second part of Ajlittoz’s answer. Could you all please tell me how you set up and use the Open A Document portion of both Writer & Calc. In other words when you go to Writer, how do you open a document? Then when you go to Calc, how do you open a document there? Thanks again

I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking, but does this help?:

In both Writer and Calc, go to the top left entry on the toolbar at the top and click File… Open
This should take you into the familiar windows directories from which you can find the files you need to open. Open by double-clicking the file name. LibreOffice will know by the file extension whether it’s a .doc or .xls and open in the appropriate program (Writer or Calc, respectively).
