On bringing up a document in LibreOffice, an error sign box pops up stating that my file no longer exists. Where are my documents?
Which file opening method are you using:
- Clicking on the tiles of the LO quick launcher?
- Using the Recent list of the LO applications?
- Clicking on the file names in a file manager software?
- Using the File - Open menu item in the LO applications?
Thank you so much for getting back to me. I first click on the LO icon and all of my documents come up in picture form. When I click on one of the document pictures, the error window pops up stating that the document doesn’t exist. I hope that makes sense or at least helps you.
It means:
- The document does not exist on THAT place. Maybe you moved replaced or deleted them by an another file manager. (Or a portable storage device is not present.)
- You have not rights open files from to that place. This problem related to the security settings and security softwares (Like the Microsoft Defender)
Thank you again.
I know I didn’t delete, but I can’t be certain of anything else. I am going to look into Microsoft Defender as you mentioned. I’ll let you know one way or the other what happens.
Again, I thank you very much.
Yay! I learned that LibreOffice not only automatically saves documents to LibreOffice but it also saves in my hard drive in documents. I slowly read each document and found the documents that I was missing. I opened each one and saved it in LibreOffice. Can’t believe I figured it out!
Thank you again for your attention and for so promptly getting back to me. Happy New Year!
Thank you again.

Any editor software will not save the documents INTO the own program directory. (Or how you imagene the “saving to the LibreOffice” procedure?) The softwares always save the “products” (the document files) into a user-selected or into a default directory of a storage device. This place can be a HDD, an SSD, a thumbdrive, a cloud directory, etc…
The LibreOffice can remember the last savings: this is the Recent list. You must remember (or browse) the saving place all of other documents, where YOU saved them to.
Thanks again, Tibor. You are the best!
