I use Libre Office Calc 5.1.2.2
According to the Help there should be a Menu function: Insert, Link to external data.
However this is NOT available in the Libre Office Calc which I im using. How is that possible?

The main menus in Writer, Calc and Impress were reorganized to improve usability, group similar functions together, add functions that were not present and sorting items based on their usage and importance.
In Calc there is a new Sheet▸Link to External Data menu
