I am creating a document that when saved the formatting of the numbers and indents change .

This point will become 1.4 or even C even after utilizing up one level or the tab key. Also the indents go out to the edge, even after setting.
I had used 3. something or another to form a similar document, but it did not have so many sub points, this one could have up to 6 sub points.
