ODT doc reverts to preformatted after changing text format and saving

I have an ODT document that originally started out as a plain text file, and opens as Preformatted with Liberation Mono font.

I can edit the contents and save changes, but I can’t permanently change the font formatting. For example, I just selected all the text, cleared formatting, set it to default then Liberation Sans, and changed a few headings to bold. Then I saved the file and closed it.

On opening, it’s all in preformatted mono font again.

What’s happening?

It likely still is a plain text file. It only was renamed to another extension (ODT), not saved as an OpenDocument file.

File|Save As, and make sure to choose the correct file type in respective drop down.

That did it.

Thank you!

Interestingly when I did Save As → All Formats, instead of just Save, it created a .txt file alongside the renamed .odt. Anyway, I’ve now got a genuine .odt as well.

It is not a pure renaming procedure. The LO will store the text AND the formatting properties into the .odt file. And the “Save As” will create a new copy of your diocument when the file name or the filename extension is different. The older copy will not contain the newest changes of the text and the changes of the formatting.
