every time i try to start libreoffice [no matter what part] i see it come up and see the initial LIBRE OFFICE starting with the bar and then it disappears not to be seen
ON Mint 13 i do not have the problem.
I have uninstalled re-installed several times in different ways but it does not
work.

I’m running LO 4.0.3.3 happily on MInt 13 Xfce (like your experience). It would be good to know how you’re installing, though. Do you download *.deb(s) from LO website? I use the 4.0.x ppa, and it works very nicely from there via Synaptic. https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/libreoffice-4-0
Are you still having this problem? There are several things you can do:
- Reset your user profile. In the case of a new install this is not overly bad advice since you are not likely to risk losing any personal settings or data.
- You do not mention which version of LO you are using or whether you tried the version from TDF website over the Mint repository one. If you have not tried the website version, do so.
- If it still continues to crash, run a backtrace. That will provide us with more information about what is going on.
