Old spreadsheet opens as a text document in Korean

I had to re-install LO on a windows 11 laptop. When I tried to open a LO format spreadsheet, LO says it is locked by another user. Opening it in read-only mode, it comes in as a text file, in Korean ideograms.
How do I open this file as a spreadsheet, in English?

Thanks,
Steve

Hello @SteveHelfand,
This seems to be a corruption of the saved file.
Add the .zip extension to the file (filename.ods.zip), and try to open it with 7zip or similar tool, and look for the content.xml subfile.

Thank you Leroy. 7Zip doesn’t open the file, it says “this is not a zip file”, and won’t go further.

On trying other calc or text files (ODS,ODT), LO reports “general input/output error”. Also, if it’s significant, they all are Read Only.

Have you a small file (< 1MB) you could attach for analysis?

Here are two. 640z vs gfx.ods is a single tab spreadsheet, bnkbal.ods has multiple tabs
640z vs gfx.ods (23.8 KB)
bnkbal.ods (72.0 KB)

  • 640z… begins with some XML text seemingly describing graphics (but beginning is missing) until offset 0x600. Then we probably have ZIP-compressed files with the central directory at end of file.

My opinion: start of file has been overwritten by something or your filesystem is damaged because the starting sector does not look like any legitimate file type.
  • bnkbal: this is even worse. First sector claims to be related to C:\Windows\system32\SRU\SRUDB.dat. Not being a W$ user, I have no idea what it can be. This overwrites at least up to offset 0x1000. It is possible that the rest is a ZIP-compressed file (beginning overwritten) with a central directory at end.

    Same conclusion

Were your files stored on a USB key? In this case you probably removed it before flushing cache buffers to stick.

Nothing can be done to recover your data. If you have backups, follow this track.

My system was destroyed. I tried to use file recovery software, but this was the result. Thank you very much for your effort.
