I hate tabs. I open one spreadsheet, and want to open a second spreadsheet in another window, so I can FIND IT. I hate tabs. In Microsoft I would say open another instance of Excel. Is it even possible in LibreOffice?
Every file is opened in their own window, but in the same instance of the program. No tabs for different files in LibreOffice in the same window.
I just tried it again, and now I have both in a different window. I will swear it did not work that way the other day.
Creating more than one instances of LibreOffice I only know for the case of PortableLibreOffices started from different binaries with the setting “SingleAppInstance=false”. It’s not of great value anyway, except for rare cases where isololating the settings, and the histories is essential (or running different versions). I don’t even know how references between documents opened from different instances might be handled. Better not use such a construct.
Running a single Instance of LibreOffice (the “main” application that can run even without any open document) you may create as many spreadsheets in different windows by > ‘File’ > ‘New’ > ‘Spreadsheet’ as you want. But this is very different from inserting additional sheets into an already opened Calc document. References between sheets of different documents are much mor complicated (viewing the formula and concerning the implementation as well.)
Choosing one or the other way is surely a question of the needs concerning the intended functionality, not of loving or hating this or that.
Opening another instance of Excel will also be completely different from inserting another sheet into an existing document.
Lupp, thanks for answering. I did not ask about inserting another sheet into an existing spreadsheet. In many years of using Excel I have only had need of adding an extra sheep very few times. I simply want to have two different spreadsheets open and visible at the same time. One is my check register. Two is my current bills. They are two different spreadsheets. I guess what you are saying is this is impossible.
If your sptreadsheet documents only are containing one sheet each you simpüly have to adjust their respective windows using the common widow handles and icons (controls). LibreOffice will always open every document in an independent window (as @mariosv told). If there are more than one sheets in a single document I would like to learn how Excel is facilitating what you are asking for.
(Ok, I meanwhile learned how Excel should handle this.)
