"Open with" LO shows up twice

I am using LO 6.1.0.3 on Windows 10 Pro.

If I do a right click on a .txt (Notepad) and go to “Open with” LibreOffice shows up twice.

How do I find out how or why this is happening?
How do I remove one of them?
I uninstalled and reinstalled LO and it still comes up with two.

Is this normal?

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have installed a normal LibreOffice and a developer Version?

Just a normal version.
Latest download.

I’m having this same issue… and clicking either one opens the file in Writer. How do we try to resolve this? I actually don’t want LibreOffice to be on the list of apps to open a .txt file with, there’s no point.

This is no solution to the initial problem. Use the more link just above this comment to “Repost as a comment”. Thanks to follow site rules (this is a Question & Answer site, not a forum). Answers are reserved for solutions.

@Regina
Same on my W10-64pro machine. I had installed the DEV version, after deinstallation the regular version. I am afraid that this problem has to be solved in editing the registry…

Can someone at least explain why this happens?

@all , The two icons can also be found in the app list. One is LO-normal and the other is LO-safe mode.

After starting LO, this should be visible in the title bar at the top.

However, I have not tested it now.

The app list? What do you mean the app list? In “Choose another app”? That shows Libre Office Calc and LibreOffice Writer in “Other options”. I’m not seeing LO-normal or LO-safe anywhere. Why would Calc show as an other option for a .txt file??

I have LibreOffice 7.0.4.2 open in Windows 10 Pro and I don’t see what your screenshot shows anywhere. I’m not seeing how to paste a screenshot here.

Your screenshot doesn’t say “normal” or “safe” versions of LO… so I don’t know how you’re connecting those dots.

What do you mean the app list?

You know the “Windows Start” icon and select “All Apps”.

Another image of the discussed problem…

I had the same problem (LibreOffice 7), found these entries in the registry:

  • In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\OpenWithProgIDs: value “soffice.StarCalcDocument.6” REG_SZ “” and value “soffice.StarWriterDocument.6” REG_SZ “”
  • In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\The Document Foundation\LibreOffice\7.0\Capabilities\FileAssociations: value “.txt” REG_SZ “soffice.StarWriterDocument.6”

Removed both “soffice.Star…” values from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\OpenWithProgIDs, problem solved, only one entry remaining in Open with… sub-menu (and still opens Writer).
To be safe (if you feel uncomfortable with RegEdit), export HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\OpenWithProgIDs before modifying its content (right-clic context menu on OpenWithProgIDs within HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt, Export) in a file, if something goes wrong, double-clic the exported file (don’t forget where you saved it) to restore the removed values.

Afterthought: removing only soffice.StarCalcDocument.6 from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\OpenWithProgIDs was enough, no more duplicate. The supprising thing is that both entries opened Writer, one should have opened Calc (StarCalcDocument) instead ???
