Optimal width does not work for column

I just updated to libre office 7.2 but this version seems to contain several bugs.

One of them: I created a new spreadsheet document, copied some items into a new spreadsheet column. In order to optimize the width of the column (some text was larger than the current column width), I right-clicked on the column (“A”), choose “optimal width”, and clicked on “OK”.

Nothing happened. The column width was not changed. I had to change the width by myself.

Is this a known bug?

In order to call an effect a bug, you need to reproduce it. Please upload a sample file with the specified effect and specify exactly the steps to reproduce the error.

Sure. Here is an example (column A):
Width-example1.ods (8.0 KB)

remove the direct formatting Ctrl + M

Yes, that is the solution.

But still: Resizing the column width is not working. For me that is a bug. It clearly not works.

I do not care if the cell content is text, numbers, hyperlinks, images, audio, whatever.

No bug.
The automatic line break was activated when inserting text
and therefore the optimal column width did not work.

I am not sure I follow.

To me “optimal column width” means that the column width is adjusted automatically so that all the visible text fits in the width of a column.

I click on “optimize column width” and it does not adjust the column width.

It is clearly a bug!

No, it isnt!
There is a direct Format as @Vrolik has statet, and after removing direct Format, →Column→Optimal Width works

When I right click on a column I see the option “Optimal width…” I do not see an option “Optimal width (only working if elements in the cells do not have direct formatting)…”

How should I know that? Perfectly non-intuitive! Without searching for the solution NOBODY knows how to fix this. Impossible to know “that you have to do something else” until the"optimal width" is working.

Not end-user useable.

Once upon a time there were books to read. And even in this modern times there is a lot of readable documentation available.

Yes sure there is documentation. But I expect software like this rather intuitive useable, without reading like thousand pages to understand even the smallest tiny bit of features available.

Maybe I am wrong? I need to read the ton of documentation before I can/should use software like this?

If you want to avoid such irritations in the future, you should insert unformatted text.

Thanks for the tips.

But I can assume every user posting formatted text will have the same problem. And probably asking the same question over and over again.

I think a better solution is to toggle the Wrap on/off and then select optimal width. There are many instances where it is desirable to keep formatted text e.g. it contains useful hyperlinks.

I agree with OP that this is not clear in the documentation. In particular the Optimal Width page doesn’t mention not working on formatted text?

In the example given in the message above, the issue is precisely in the hyperlinks.
For normal text with direct formatting (bold, italic, other font, …) the optimal column width is set correctly.
