Page break modification on a preformatted template document

Hi All,

I’m trying to customise a universally available word doc template retrieved from here: Free resumé template - SEEK Career Advice using an up to date version of LibreOffice.

When I try and add a third, fourth etc. job in the employment history section I’m finding that after adding the job title (in its unique preformatted style - indentedBodyStyle) and pressing enter to then input the dates that I performed the role (roleDateStyle preformatting) on the next line, it dumps me to the next page creating this big disjointed gap between the job title heading and the dates in the light grey text that should be on the line below.

I suspect this is something to do with page breaks? but using the existing help topics on this issue Inserting and Deleting Page Breaks I can’t identify where the page breaks actually are on the document. Furthermore, another help page mentioned referring to the View menu and “page breaks” but I have no such options within the view menu of my Libreoffice version (for OpenBSD)…

Thanks in advance for any guidance on how I might delete these annoying gaps that are preventing me from properly creating a resume!

You didn’t say which template, I just looked at Modern template

It might be helpful to keep blocks of information together but it might not suit everyone’s resume. Check that you aren’t making too many words, the first page is vital, anything after that might not be read.

The effects comes from the Keep with next paragraph box in the paragraph style. In the Sidebar click the Styles icon to open the Styles pane. Right click the bulletStyle, select Modify > Text Flow and untick Keep with next paragraph.

Same paragraph properties (see: @EarnestAl) in the professional template.

The templates you point to are .docx. This means they’ll undergo conversion/translation when read in and again when saved. Though Writer tries to be compatible with Word as much as possible, exact translation is impossible because both suites are based on different principles.

Nevertheless, we lack basic information to help you: OS name (OpenBSD? which version?), LO version (“up-to-date” is not a factual version number) and we now know you are using DOCX format.

DOCX knows of paragraph styles only. This implies that your templates are plagued with direct formatting. Word paragraph styles are different from those in Writer and cannot be converted exactly. But I’d suspect like @EarnestAl Keep with next paragraph.

PS; when you post here, always mention OS name, LO version and save format.

Thanks so much for this clear and helpful reply. It’s instantly solved the issue of unintended gaps being created between the content of the previous style and then the differently styled heading of the next section. Now my Resume is 3 instead of 5 pages long. Is @EarnestAI a real person btw or a genuine AI for these forums? (AI has been making remarkable progress of late)…

I am a real person who makes real mistakes, just like genuine AI. Cheers, Al

Don’t be confused by the default Sans Serif font. “Al” is “A-ell” (like Alan or Albert), not “A-eye”

Think Paul Simon - You can call me Al
