From a general point of view, with current computer power (both in speed and memory), master+sub-documents is no longer really needed. This complication makes sense when you have a library of sub-docs you reuse over many masters (e.g. a collection of hierarchy-approved contract clause variants) or when you write a “monster” book (well over 1000+ pages with many pictures, tables, …).
Going for master+sub-docs requires a very strict methodic approach to book writing based on styles with absolutely no direct formatting. Formatting in the master+sub-docs case relies on style names to make the link between what is done in the sub-documents and what is displayed in the master.
This is true for all style categories: paragraph, character, page, frame and list. I highlighted page because the symptom you describe without a lot of details suggests you ended up with one page style per page. This frequently happens when you edit over and over a DOCX document because of the huge differences in encoding and expressiveness of DOCX and ODF document standards.
