Paste special link in Calc - err:504

When I try to do a paste special > Paste special > link in Calc from one workbook to another, I just get an err:504 but cannot find a fix or an explanation of the reason for this.
I have checked the boxes for text, numbers, date & time and Link, but I am still getting the err:504. I have also cleared my clipboard.

That is no help to me because I have tried all kinds of combinations in the Paste Special> Paste Special list of options and none of them worked. It did work when I originally installed an earlier version of LibreOffice, but not with this version.

Alternatively, you can upload an anonymized file that contains the problem here. Then someone can test it.

Where? In the originating file or the file where you pasted in the linked data? Using Paste Special -> Option: [x] Link creates a link to the original data (see also Edit -> Link to External Files...) and if you see an error 504 then the error is on the original file already.

I am getting the error in the worksheet where I tried to paste in the linked data. I don’t understand the point about the error being in the original worksheet. All I have there are numbers added together, for example, the original sheet shows a cell with =10397-10000+77+.... and the total shown in the cell is 4582. Can you spot an error? I copied the cell in the original went to the cell in the file where I want to link the data, and selected paste special>paste special> and made sure that the following boxes were checked: text, numbers, date & time and Link and get only the err

I don’t understand the point about the error being in the original worksheet.

You told that you have option [x] Link in Paste Special. And this means: You create a Link (as per your will) to the original file. And if the original file has an 504 somewhere in the range you pasted using [x] Link, then you get the error inherited from the original file (And that’s why i pointed (see also `Edit → Link to External Files…´)

And I did not mean, where you checked the error to appear, but where you checked …boxes for text, numbers, date & time and Link

First I want to apologize for providing incorrect data, and to thank you for your help. I have vision problems The correct error message was Err:540, not 504, and when I restarted my computer, opened the files and clicked to automatically update the external links, I was able to use the paste link function. Because of my impaired vision, sometimes I do not see all the information on the screen and the notification message that I need to update the links is kind of squeezed. It would be nice if that were changed to a popup box, but that is another issue. I am going to put in an answer but I am not certain it is correct.

was Err:540, not 504,

This would have made it clear from the very beginning.

From what I have been able to determine, this problem was caused by a failure on my part to timely update the links when starting the program. The error code should have been Err:540, not Err:504 as I originally posted. At least one reason why the Paste SpeciaL>Paste Special>Link stopped working was that I did not notice that I needed to update the links when I got the warning message. Once I restarted the program and original file and clicked to update the links I was able to see my data instead of the error message. I want to thank your team for all the help.
