PDF Export does not show italicized text

I’m getting a weird issue in the newest edition of LibreOffice where converting a document to PDF is leaving out italicized text. I see this issue discussed about 7 years ago, but it was mainly about fonts that were installed and not allowed to be exported that way.

All of the italicized text that is exclusively Liberation Serif. All of the text that is in Impact and in italics converts just fine.

Version: 24.8.3.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 48a6bac9e7e268aeb4c3483fcf825c94556d9f92
CPU threads: 8; OS: Windows 11 X86_64 (10.0 build 26100); UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win

Calc: threaded

The file - 2024-25 ESU MBB vs Rockhurst.ods - Google Drive
The PDF - 2024-25 ESU MBB vs Rockhurst.pdf - Google Drive

I see no problems with all the cells:

But there seems to be a bug, when trying to export to PDF only one merged cell.

Open it in a pdf reader, not Draw.

I am using Foxit PDF Reader to open.

Sorry, I was slow to find the italics in white font colour (not left out) in your export. I cannot replicate, not matter what type of pdf I export.

I cannot replicate your pdf size, mostly I get around 1.2 Mb although with UA I get 5.163 Mb. Are you printing to pdf? Or File > Export As > Export as PDF (always the better option)?

Typically I use the PDF button on one of the shortcut bar (when hovering over it says Export directly to PDF) - I don’t know which that is bound to specifically.

The settings there are the ones last used in File > Export as > Export as PDF. By following those steps, you can check the settings you are using, most of the important ones are on the General tab.
.
Those settings should not cause italics to print in white though.
.
If you click Help > Restart in Safe Mode > Continue in safe mode, open the .ods and then export as pdf, do the italics appear in white in the resulting pdf?

I tried that and there was no difference - the italics that are in Liberation Serif do not appear in the PDF. I still have the file if that helps but it looks exactly the same as the one I posted already.

Did you check in your windows control panel / fonts, if the Liberation Serif / Italics TTF is installed on your system?

When opening your pdf with my Acrobat PDF Reader I get the error message “The embedded Font ‘FAAAAA+LiberationSerif-Italic’ could not be restored from the document …” (Sorry, translated from German), and the corresponding text is missing.
Did you check under File/Properties/Fonts, if you embed some fonts?

And, fun fact, if I import your pdf into Inkscape everything works fine.
BTW, when I (Win 10, latest LO) export to pdf, the file is 4.416.577 bytes. Your file is 4.230.629 bytes

Lilberation Serif is installed with four font faces.

I do not have either font embedding option checked - I’ve never tried to do that… do I need to? Everything was working without it until this update recently…

No, on my computer it works fine without font embedding. I am on LO 24.8.4.2, so a bit newer than yours, but I would be surprised if that is the reason. Sorry, running out of gas …

One other very interesting thing… I have another file that I just converted today… it is substantially the same document (different teams… updated stats…) but THIS one… DID convert correctly…

On the same machine… no changes in settings…

Maybe something in the PDF export isn’t working correctly every time?

… lets start simple. Export the attached ods to pdf, make sure that no ticks are in this dialog.

Which specific cell has the problem? Is it expected that a person who wants to help must inspect ~300 columns x 130 rows?

I tried that - there were a couple of changes from the default settings on my version, but the italicized text at the bottom is still missing using all the settings you listed here.

It is not.

The cell that most often has this problem is the one that is listed under Notes & Superlatives in the original document. It is in Row 110-131 and in column AQ through CX on the left side. The rows are the same on the left but the columns are JC to KL.

Appreciate everyone’s help on this! Probably won’t be checking in during holiday (should have gone home already today to be honest) but I can answer any more questions when I am back after Christmas. Merry Christmas to all of you!

Another very VERY weird development…

I have created a new document (for a new game)… links below for the original file and the PDF:

Italicized text in the Liberation Serif is now printing properly in the cell… while other parts are not! Prevoiusly it had been all or nothing… but now some of the text appears and some doesn’t.

The mystery continues…

This is from the document - everything appears.

This is from the PDF - you can see after KEY departures… SOME of the italics are missing… but not all of them!

It appears to affect non-bolded italicized text, but there are other places where italicized does appear.
