Please help me set a new page style as default within a current document

Hello, I’ve read other threads with similar issues to mine but they don’t answer my question.

I’ve already set my default page style so that when I open up libreoffice a new page will start with the correct margins and font etc. That’s all fine.

My issue is that I use a lot of different page styles within a single document. I create these by going Styles > Manage Styles > Page Styles and then creating a new style. I want to change the default settings for a new style.

Like I say, I’ve already set my default template for each new document, but when I create a new style within this document, the default is A4 with 2 cm margins and I have to change this every time which is very time consuming.

I’ve been searching for a solution but every thread I come across appears to be referring to the default template of a new document which I’ve already changed.

Please help.

Why not open the sidebar, find your current page style, right click on it and select New. Give the new style a name then right click on that style and Modify to make your alterations to that?

Why do you need many page styles? Like too many fonts, or too many heading styles you can end up with a confusing document.

Thank you. Yes, that is exactly what I do, but I was hoping there is a way to set the default so I don’t have to modify the page size and margins each time. I use them so I can have different headings for many different pages. This is important for the projects I am working on.

It is a requested feature, the page styles do not yet support hierarchical structure like paragraph styles: Bug 41316 - Page styles should support hierarchical parent-child relationships (like paragraph or character styles).

Thank you. I have set a template for every new document I open and that works fine. But when I open a new page style the settings for the new style revert back to the old default. Have I not set it up correctly then? I will review the link you’ve sent me. Thanks

Unless I don’t understand correctly your current state of affairs, you already have a template with various page styles within.

As your page styles are already there (aren’t they?), all you need to do is to double-click on a name in the style sidepane. The page styles are listed after you click on the fourth icon from the left in the sidepane toolbar (Page Styles when you hover over it).

The only thing which needs to be changed in the page style after applying it is header/footer content unless this content is automatically generated from field insertion(s).

As @keme commented, too many page styles is probably a consequence of a clumsy design of the document. Look at fields to unify them.

LibreOffice Help is a wonderful addition to the program.

You can create a page template in which you make all the changes that should appear in all page templates.

From this template you derive all other page templates and change only what is still necessary.

Thank you, but no, I’ve already done that. I know how to set a new page style. I just want to change the default to the style settings so I don’t have to modify it every time I create a new style. Is that not possible?
