Please Help: Writer Not Saving to Default Folder (Programming Bug?)

Hello,
I hope someone can solve this issue for me. I already know how to change the default folder that LibreOffice saves documents to. It works fine, until I open a document that is in a different folder. After that, LibreOffice Writer saves every document to THAT folder, instead of the default folder.

Also, if I save a document to a different folder other than the default folder, LibreOffice Writer saves every document to THAT folder, instead of the default folder.

This behavior continues even after I close LibreOffice and relaunch it later.

In other words, opening a document from a different folder, or saving a document to a folder other than the default folder, basically changes the default folder. The only way to reset LibreOffice to saving things to the default folder is to either:

A) Manually change the location inb the address bar to the default folder when saving a document, or

B) Shut down my computer and reboot.

Is there a solution to this problem?

Thank you,
Greg

Personally, I tend to work in projects for a few weeks or so; always saving documents to a folder before moving on to another project and a different folder, so this suits me very well.

You could use the LibreOffice save dialogue (Tools > Options > LibreOffice > General > Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes), where the My Documents folder is in a separate Places pane, just one click away. You can add other places to the pane too.
LibreOfficeOwnSaveDialogue

However, this is probably an unneeded step as most file managers allow you to add your own shortcuts, or pinned folders. You need to consult the instructions for your own, unknown, operating system file manager.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. This is apparently a bug in the code that needs to be fixed (speaking as a former software developer).

It is the default behaviour of MS windows explorer. I don’t think they will change this in the next time, but good luck asking them.
.
But to be precise: Default is to save a document to the place where you loaded it. Your problem arises with presenting the last used folder in SaveAs as “current directory”, or obviously for new files.

No, it is only a completely useless setting, which is in reality “where to open file dialogs the first time, when there’s no history; or in some very specific situations”. It works that way, but it is really useless, and provokes users thinking it’s more than that.

I don’t have a “My Documents” folder so I assume the setting has populated the Places pane in the LibreOffice dialogue with the name which in fact refers to my default location to save files, which translates C:\[username]\Documents

It is also useful when I am not connected to my network where I normally store documents. It then offers me the My Documents location while on the road.

Yes … But you likely had the default value there useful for your needs, right? I bet that almost 100% people will not use different default documents directories across different applications, so OS-defined (configurable - e.g. on Windows) default document directory would fit most. We can calculate this value automatically. In your case, this would fit just as well, I assume.

So: 1. It is rarely needed when the program runs; 2. It rarely needs to be modified - in fact, most of the cases when people modify it, they expect it to do something different than its actual purpose. Hence, I think that this setting does more harm than good
