Possible to Bypass / Override a Single Parameter In Paragraph Styles

Is there a way to bypass a single parameter, like the font size when applying a a paragraph style to a paragraph?

Or more broadly, is there a way to bypass any single parameter, like font type, size, italicisation, etc… in any of the LibreOffice style categories?

I recently used LibreOffice to make a *.pdf resume and it worked really well! I come from a graphic design background though, and so I often want to change the style of specific elements and then also larger collections of them. Obviously, changing one often necessitates adjusting another. I’m getting more and more familiar with the way styles work, but being able to selectively apply a style is a feature I’d love to use.

It is all about inheritance. Look at the styles in Hierarchical view to see how they inherit.

The grandfather of all paragraph styles is Default Paragraph Style. Every paragraph style below is a variant.

Heading paragraph style makes some major changes and all Headings inherit from Heading

All the Heading styles have Body Text as the next paragraph style. Body Text has only a few differences from Default Paragraph Style, these are list in the General tab under the heading Contains. As you can see, font size is not listed so the font size comes from Default Paragraph Style. Is this what you mean by “bypass any single parameter”? Many parameters are “bypassed” in Body Text.

As soon as you make a change to an attribute, that attribute is no longer inherited. The only way to bring back inheritance for the attribute is to click the button Reset to Parent which should reset everything in that tab back to its parent style.

I suggest you refer to the Writer Guide, download from English documentation | LibreOffice Documentation - LibreOffice User Guides .

You can overwrite the properties of a paragraph style

  • by a simple manual method (direct formatting method)
  • by a custom character style. Use the property “parent of the character style”: None (No Character Style). In this case the unmodified properties of the character style will be inherited from the applied paragraph style.

Here is a small sample file with three custom paragraph styles and one custom character style with one modified property: the bakground color. Therefore you can use it in each paragraph style as an only one highligth style for a part of the text in a paragraph. The Font, Font size, and the other properties will be inherited from the paragraph style, except the font background color.
