prevent automatic underlining spaces

Is there any option to return to the old behavior of not underlining white space when initially clicking underline (or control-u) when the cursor is positioned between words?

I often need to manually indicate changes in a document by underlining new words and striking words that are to be removed. If I want to add a word, I only want the word underlined. I don’t want leading or trailing spaces underlined. Up until a recent update, I would: 1) position the cursor where I wanted to add a word (such as between two other words in the middle of a sentence); 2) add one space; 3) either click the underline button on the format menu or use the control-u shortcut; 4) type the word(s) to be added.

Now however, when I do this same process, at my step 3 above, the white space (2 spaces in this example) become underlined. This is tedious because after finishing the insertion, I need to go back and remove the leading and trailing underlining. Alternatively, I know that I could make the insertion without underlining and when finished, highlight the entire insertion and mark it as underlined. However, this way is not ideal because it can be easy to lose track of where the insertion began.

Again, this is a new behavior. Is there any option to return to the old behavior of not underlining white space when initially clicking underline (or control-u)?

Just tested with 6.3.3.2, and with 3.3.0 - both are using usual single-line underlining with “Single words” option turned off when using Ctrl+U. The option is available in Character properties dialog - but is not default.

Your workflow description is a bit like what “track changes” is meant for. However, that function will also mark spaces inserted/deleted, and add coloration. It is a complete tool for change/review management, so you may look into it anyway, if you haven’t already. It may make your job a whole lot easier.

Just mentioning it because you didn’t, so I suspect you aren’t aware of it.
