Print dialog preview won't show tabloid size

I’m tearing my hair out looking for an answer and can’t find one. I’m using LO 7.3.2.2 Calc.

The print dialog shows 8.50 x 11.00 preview when I try to print to an 11.00 x 17.00 paper size. The result is when I print the page on my Epson SC-700 printer the image is reduced to the print area of an 8.50 x 11.00 paper. I have set the paper size in the printer itself to 11.00 x 17.00.

If I select other paper sizes, except #10 envelope, in the print dialog the preview size is correct. Every other program I print from prints correctly. LO also shows 8.50 x 11.00 when I select #10 envelope. In fact it seems LO will not import any paper settings from the Epson paper selections.

What do I do?

Do you have Tabloid size set in Format > Page Style > Page > Paper Format?

Yes. Size is 17.00 x 11.00.

I think I read here months ago where LO does not pick up on printer settings for Epson printers. Although, I have no problems with 8.50 x 11.00 not working correctly.

You might have some previous settings for page breaks.

  1. Click View > Page breaks
  2. Right click on the sheet and from the context menu select Delete page breaks
  3. Click View > Normal then test

So the work-around to print to pdf first should be possible for you.
.
Actually I’m asked by my Epson printer (on its display) how to proceed, if paper-size of print-job and paper registered for the tray are different. So size of paper in my printer is not necessarily read from the printer. But your driver may differ from mine…
.

Do you use system-dialogs or the “own” by LibreOffice. Usually I stay with system dialogue.

I don’t find any page breaks.

That is what I finally did, and do for envelopes.

It seems to make no difference what the paper size is I have selected in the Epson printer screen. The printing area is determined by the settings in LO.

OK, here’s some more info. LO definitely does NOT read paper sizes from the SC-P700 printer properties. I went to Files/Printer Settings - Epson SC-P700 - Printer Properties and created a user paper size I called oddball. It shows up in the print dialog for Adobe Reader.

The paper size drop down list in LO Print dialog does not show oddball.
When I go to the LO Print dialog and then Epson SC-P700 Series Properties and select oddball this is what I get. The paper size is totally wrong.
.
Oddball paper size does not show up in the drop down list for paper format when I go to Format/Page Style/Page.
I have been experimenting with different user defined paper sizes. They don’t show up in the drop down list for Format/Page Styles but will show in the drop down list in the printer dialog. And most of them show the correct size for the preview in the print dialog.
My conclusion is the printing subsystem in LO is fouled up. The various parts of it don’t pass paper size info to each other. Paper sizes in the Format subsystem don’t show up in the printing subsystem. And none of this explains why for tabloid size, 11 x 17, the preview in the print dialog comes up 8.5 x 11 when other sizes do come up correctly.

Would it be fair to say that the LO developers really need to take a hard look at the entire printing subsystem and get it functioning properly?

Say whatever you like. It is a free world… I would usually suggest you start with some serious coding and we continue next year.
.
One of your assumptions is, to set a paper-size in the epson driver and finding this also in LibreOffice afterwards (not only in the print dialogue). May be possible, but I never work this way. I create my documents with special sizes in LibreOffice, then I print this to one of our printers (HP/Epson/Brother).
.
You showed Adobe “fitting” a page and
Epsons settings page. Actually I would be more interested in your preview by LibreOffice and the settings for the page in LibreOffice… But as it is your problem, you decide where to look and how to approach your problem.
.
If you create a page with 8.5x17 in LibreOffice, can you then print it?

I tried hard with the issues you face to simulate them on my Brother printer which has Tabloid as one of the sizes but cannot. Even setting your Oddball size as a paper size in the printer, then setting the Page Style to it, it shows the correct dimensions for the paper in the Print Preview screen and in the printer driver although neither use the name I gave the size and just list it as User-defined.

The fact that the Epson SC-P700 printer driver screen is not showing the correct size for the Oddball paper that you set in it might be an indication that there is something not right in the printer driver. I see there are recent (December 2022) updates to both firmware and to the drivers. Is your printer fully up-to-date?

Here is a step by step process that should make it more clear what is and isn’t happening. Updating the firmware for the printer didn’t solve the problem.
Open the ss
Go to File/Printer Settings
Printer Setup dialog opens
Select Epson SC-P700 and click on Properties
Dialog 1 opens

I change Select Setting to Tabloid
Now Dialog 2

Click on OK & go back to Printer Setup
Click on OK to close
Go to Format/Page Style
Select Tabloid in Format drop down list
Dialog 3

Click OK
Click on Printer Icon
Now see Dialog 4

Page Layout/Paper Size shows Tabloid
Preview shows 8.50 in by 11.00 in with (Tabloid) as name
When I click Print this is the preview of the print job. On the right you can see that 8.50 x 11.00 is the image size the Output paper size.

I now go back and click on the Printer Icon again and dialog 4 shows.

Now I go to Page Layout/Paper Size and select a user defined size of 10.95 x 16.95. The preview changes to 10.95 x 16.95 in portrait.
Dialog 5

If I select Landscape orientation and resize the dialog window sometimes I can get the preview to rotate to landscape. The preview doesn’t always want to rotate to landscape even when Landscape is selected.
Dialog 6

Now I click on the Print button. This is the Epson preview. You can see the correct size and output paper are shown on the right end of the preview.

This same issue affects printing on #10 envelopes from Writer. In both of these cases LO will show the correct preview in the Printer icon dialog if the selected paper is not the standard size for tabloid and #10 envelope, and sends that paper info to the printer.

Your steps 1-4 work fine with my Brother printer, and it shows correct previews. After that I substituted A3 for Tabloid ( I don’t have Tabloid paper) and stepped through again and it outputs correctly.

There is printer driver listed, v.6.81.00, 02-Dec-2022, 48.10 MB, is that the same version as your printer driver?

I cannot reproduce problem so I am out
