Problem displaying certain chinese characters

Hello,

I need to display certain chinese characters in LO calc.
Most characters work fine but some only display as placeholder rectangle or other symbols. They are displayed correctly in other software (note-editor, notepad ++, firefox etc.), but i do not know which font they use for that.
I have chinese fonts installed and support for asian languages is activated. I am on win 10 und using LO 5.2.7.2

Some of the characters are:
𠂌 𠃌 𡱒 ⺆ ⺊ 𠄠 𠀃

Some other characters, and that to me is even more strange sometimes work and sometimes do not, e.g.:
𠮷 𢦏 𠦝

Any clues what to do?

Those rectangles are showing you that you have a valid Unicode character, but the font you are using does not have a character entry for that code. I have little knowledge of Chinese fonts but I tried Gungsuh 倚倜偠傘凔咿孔孰, which I believe is a Chinese font provided with LibreOffice and allows me to insert Chinese characters as above.

The default Liberation Sans on my Linux system, on the other hand does not support Chinese. Anyway, try Gungsuh as a starter.

I have some chinese fonts installed. Gungshu is unfortunately not free so i cannot try it but that should not be the problem. I know there must be at least one font that has those characters (or i would not be able to use them e.g. in the windows text editor etc. … would I?) but I tried all available fonts and had no luck in libre office (writer and calc). It does also not explain why some of the characters work some times and some times they do not.

I am assuming that you are using .ods to save your spreadsheets and not .xls or .xlsx. Otherwise you might be hitting font replacement problems which could explain why the characters work some of the time and not others.

It seems that if windows can display a character it does not mean, there is also a font installed that one can use (?)

I now use http://www.fileformat.info to find out which fonts contain the needed characters (e.g.: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/20003/fontsupport.htm). In LO calc BabelStone Han does the job for this character, MingiLiu-ExtB does not (but it should). I will see if i can now find a font for every character that i need.
