Question about dark/light theme and how to adjust them

My machine switches my GTK3 theme between light and dark regularly, and LibreOffice follows the decision for the GUI, which is wonderful.

Under Options>LibreOffice>view I set the mode to System. With the dark theme, I want to have inverted colors (or “dark” colors) in the documents, and I struggle to set it up correctly. Under Options>LibreOffice>Applications Colors I chose “Scheme” “automatic” and for “Automatic” “System theme”.

When I selected the Dark option under “Automatic” I can see that, e.g., the document background is set to black. My current understanding is, that when the system sets the theme to dark, LO follows it and selects “Dark” under “Automatic”. If that’s true, why is the dark background color not applied?

Is there a way to switch the icons with dark/light theme? I would like to use Breeze icons and it would be helpful if they switched to their dark/light versions as well.

I bet I misunderstand these settings, so thank you for your help

EDIT and somewhat TLDR: Why isn’t the dark document background (GUI is dark) applied when the system switches to a dark theme.
