Recently each time I start LO I get User Access Control dialogue however I start LO

it’s asking for permission for updater to modify the machine - i.e. install something.

The dialogue claims to be from The document foundation but it’s executing from one of my temp areas.

Never had this before but I only ever download updates direct from libreoffice.org and install. I did install one before Christmas but it was fine immediately after that.

Not sure what’s going on here. Anyone any ideas please?

I’m running 24.8.3.2 Community on Win 10.

I’ve recently changed from Avast to Windows Defender and only noticed this after that but as I use LO irregularly and infrequently that may be a red herring.

Ta in advance.

LibreOffice is trying to update your installation to 24.8.4.2
In the Release notes for 24.8 it says

The MAR-based automatic update available on TDF Windows builds is no longer experimental-mode–only. See Tools ▸ Options ▸ Online Update ▸ Automatic Update.

To disable automatic update of LibreOffice, follow the menu path given and untick Enable automatic update

Then may I suggest to the powers that decide release strategy this was a poor choice for implementation.

  • In the sense of not offering something post update to set or not set such an option and warn me specifically.
I do read release notes but clearly I missed this part and equally presumably as there was no new version at that point there was nothing to show me that I was now automatically updating, thus fixing in my brain that this was a genuine LO activity.

It’s important for me as a user to understand what is going on as part of protecting myself against malware and basic security, so when I see a bland UAC dialogue with no explanation before I even get into a product to know that it might be from that product I’m never going to say yes because that’s what all the advice is and that’s what is actually sensible. My brain switches to - “this installation is compromised” along with a few choice swear words.

Personally I hate auto updates with limited or no choice on any platform for any reason, mainly because developers now use it to avoid supporting function separately from security and this results in functional changes that I rarely need or want that impact my use and waste my time. Please keep these away from my primary work and leaisure platform - the desktop PC.

Thanks.

Once you have unticked the update box, it will remain unticked.

I am not a developer but a user like you so I cannot pass on your remarks to anyone.

I too have turned off the automatic update but I have seen user requests for it to be implemented. I am also aware that many people expect it to update automatically in windows like their other programs do.
