Request for Autosave and Cloud Saving Support in LibreOffice

Dear LibreOffice Support Team,

I am writing to express my strong desire for the implementation of autosave and cloud saving support features in LibreOffice. As a frequent user of the platform, I have experienced instances where I have lost unsaved work due to unforeseen circumstances such as power outages or accidental shutdowns. I believe that an autosave feature would greatly mitigate such risks and save users from losing hours of work.

Additionally, cloud saving support would be a highly welcomed addition to LibreOffice. With the increasing popularity of cloud storage platforms like Google Docs and Dropbox, it is becoming more common for users to work collaboratively and across multiple devices. Cloud saving support in LibreOffice would allow users to seamlessly access their work from anywhere and at any time, without the need for manual file transfers.

I believe that the implementation of these features would greatly enhance the user experience and increase the efficiency of using LibreOffice. I urge you to consider my request and hope that these features can be added in the near future.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Samuel Gu

We are users just like you, so I do not know whether your request will have much effect. Libreoffice has a site where issues (bugs, suggestions for improved workflow, …) can be filed. Everyone can create an account. However, you should first make sure the issue was not already filed.

In the mean time, take the habit to hit Ctrl+S quite regularly. I know this is the old way, but this is how LO still handles this.

“Autosave” and “Cloud saving” indeed can be useful, but do not see these as a universal solution. There are use cases where users handle large documents. In such cases, automated saving may be undesirable, even on the current powerful computers.

To further decrease the risk of loosing hours of work, you can enable automatic backups. You still need to save your work yourself, but in addition to the current version, the previous version is preserved in a dedicated “Backup” folder.

If you look at LibreOffice Online you will see there is work going on but it isn’t straightforward.

Collabora (a significant contributor to LibreOffice) have been working an online version of Collabora for a while, see Collabora Online - Collabora Office and Collabora Online

Since you tagged base, can you tell us which additional security to those provided by your database engine (which you didn’t name) you desire? Usual DB systems have features to guard against the hazards you mention, save for the last transaction.

In case your question is not related to DBs, retag your question as common as it seems to be a rather generic question.
