Right aligning every frame in a writer document

how can i right align every single text frame in a writer document?

I have a writer document that is full of text frames that are right aligned, but the page format is currently A4… If I change the page dimensions to format the document for publishing as a book, every frame needs to be once more right aligned, just wondering if there is a quick way to do this?

thankyou!
kind regards,

Frame or Text box?

  • A text box is a drawing object for text and has no Style in Writer so manual adjustments are needed.
  • A frame has a style associated with it. The style can be set to be right-aligned and the frame will always be right-aligned no matter the page size. The exceptions to that are
    1. If you manually adjust the position (direct formatting) that overrides the style and it will not change position; selecting the frame and double-clicking the relevant frame style in the sidebar will remove the position and the frame will follow the style alignment.
    2. If the frame is too big and it interferes with another frame then it might overlap or be overlapped by that frame. If Allow overlap is unticked in the frame style then the frame might be pushed to the left.

if i right click on it and choose properties, it shows it is a “frame” (top left corner)…

but how do i set the style of all such frames to be right aligned quickly, without doing each one individually?

i really don’t know how to set the style of one frame… i have always clicked the right alignment button each frame but don’t wish to do that again for every single frame… there are literally 100s of them…

thank you!

In the sidebar, click the Styles icon to open the styles pane, click the Frame icon at the top to display the frame styles.
If the frames are all Frame style, then right click on Frame and select Edit Style. In the Type tab, under Position - Horizontal select Right, … to Paragraph text area . OK

This means all your frames have been manually adjusted. Therefore they all have now direct formatting. At the very least, you must select all of them to apply a clean frame style. Unfortunately, you can’t select several frames simultaneously. The “edit” must be done on each frame individually.

Start by creating a frame style, experimenting with the first frame. Presently, all your frames are styled Frame (which is the default for text frame) modified by direct formatting (different on every frame). If you have no other kind of text frames, e.g. some in the left margin or centered in the middle of their paragraph, modify Frame style. Other, design a custom style derived from Frame so that it inherits To paragraph anchor mode.

Once your parameters are set (essentially Position with horizontal Right relative to Paragraph text area to align with right edge of paragragh or Page text area to align with right margin and vertical Top or Center relative to Paragraph text area), follow the procedure below to see the effect. This procedure is necessary because frame styles don’t behave completely like the other styles and clear formatting command is ineffective on them.

  1. select the frame if not already selected
  2. apply another style, e.g. Graphics (this is the step which clears direct formatting)
  3. apply your desired style, e.g. Frame or the one you created

When you’re satisfied with the look, proceed with all frames. This is a necessary burden to cleanly style all your frames. After that, modifying the Frame (or custom style) is all you need to do to change the position of all the frames simultaneously (sometimes with Tools>Update>Update All because frame styles are frequently reluctant to follow the changes and need to be whipped).

And, above all, don’t (and this means under no circumstance ever) move a frame with the mouse or alter any of its properties (size, …) manually or you’ll add direct formatting and “detach” the frame from the style.
