Selected text is not replaced with ASCII apostrophe

Since I auto-updated to 24.8.0.3 (X86_64) Community, I’ve noticed an issue when I’m typing.

  1. In Writer, select a bunch of text.
  2. Press the Apostrophe key
:exclamation: Instead of replacing my selection with an ASCII apostrophe, the selection is now enclosed within smart quotes.

I have confirmed that AutoComplete is fully deactivated. No keyboard language changes have occurred. This is not a Find & Replace issue but a Replace Selected Text issue. The Keyboard Customisations have no option to bind the ASCII apostrophe.

Is there any way to tell Writer to replace the selected text when an ASCII apostrophe is typed?

From the release notes:

A formatting aid was added to enclose selected text with parentheses, square brackets, curly braces or quotation marks when pressing the respective opening character. Configured using Tools ▸ Options ▸ Writer ▸ Formatting Aids ▸ Enclose with characters.

So, press Del, then '.

Thank you kindred!
Please note: when I first opened the Formatting Aids screen, the checkbox was clear (indicating Enclose was off). I had to toggle the checkbox on, then off in order to clear it.

This seems to be a bug.
