If I change line widths or Area fill to ‘none’ , then if I close and re-open the drawing the settings have reverted to the ‘default’ values. I want to keep these settings for the entire drawing but they are changed to default every time. Or am I doing something wrong ?

Yes that is unfortunately so.
In an answer here on AskLibreOffice (i can’t find it right now), it is recommended to save objects in the Gallery with your desired formatting.
From there you can insert them again if necessary.
