Slow page scrolling when using the mouse scroll wheel in LibreOffice Writer

Hi,

I’ve asked the below question here, but apparently that was a wrong guess although someone was already so friendly to give me a hint.

Since a while I’ve experienced that scrolling through a document with the mouse scroll wheel is very slow. It starts slow when scrolling through the pages and then the speed increases a bit, but it’s really sometimes very annoying.

On the other hand, when using the scroll bar instead, it’s lightening fast.

Mouse: wireless HP SM-2601 mouse on a Windows 10 Home Edition PC.

I also tried with a wired mouse, but the effect is the same. No improvement.

Is there a way to get rid of the slow mouse wheel scrolling behaviour so that it’s equally fast, whether you’re using the mouse scroll wheel or the scroll bar?

Best,
–Geert

Yes, this is the right place to ask questions about LibreOffice

  • I think that the mouse scroll adjustment is through the operating system or the mouse drivers and not LibreOffice.

I do remember the behaviour was not like this before.

Also, all other apps on Windows (like NPP, MS Word, VS, VS Code) do not suffer from the same behaviour.

I will try to make a recording of it so that I can show what is the current LO Writer behaviour I face when scrolling up and down the pages.

Does it happen with all documents?, If not, please attach a sample file suffering the issue.

Please test with Menu>Help>Restart in Safe Mode.

Yes, it happens with each and every document I write with LO Writer.

I also promised to make a video of the behaviour. I made two video’s using the same document:

  • One scrolling the document using the scroll button of the mouse
  • One scrolling the document using the scroll bar

You clearly see the “shocking” and slow page scrolling in the first video and the lighting fast page scrolling in the second video.

Here are the links to the files on WeTransfer (valid until Jan 2nd, 2026):

Slow scrolling using the mouse scroll button

Fast scrolling using the scroll bar:

Those are .webm files, hope they make the issue clear.

Next to this, I ran LO Writer in Safe Mode as per your suggestion.
In that case, page scrolling with the mouse wheel is very fast. Same behaviour as with the scroll bar!
Going back to non-Safe Mode immediately after brings back the slow page scrolling when using the mouse scroll wheel.

Let me know if more info is needed.

If it doesn’t happen with a clean profile (Safe mode), while in the Safe Mode screen, there are options to clean partially or completely the profile. It is no easy to find what is corrupting the profile.

To solve the issue - and based on your input - I’ve created a new LibreOffice profile and now scrolling with the mouse scroll wheel is not an issue anymore. Saved my original profile in case I would need something out of it some time later…
