Slow with many comments

It takes two minutes to open a 300+ page docx file with many comments (25.8.2). ODT files are a bit faster but both formats are slow to navigate in. Is this a known issue, and is there any way to improve performance?

There are two factors in your question:

  • your document is DOCX, which requires conversion to internal format before being displayed or edited
  • most important, your formatting routine has a huge impact
Among common mistakes, you have erroneous usage of line breaks instead of paragraph break (most document processors collect paragraph contents before rendering it; therefore if your “paragraph” spans several pages, it slows down conversion and rendering). Tables also have an impact if cells span several pages. A high number of images will also deteriorate performance. Last, DOCX has no notion of character styles resulting in all typographical variations being applied as direct formatting (no sharing of formatting; all occurrences are unique).

I have never noticed an effect with comments but it may depend on what you call “many” comments.
