soffice.exe - bad image

just got a new low-end laptop that came with Windows 10 S. Downloaded LibreOffice Vanilla from the Microsoft Store and can’t open it. I get an error message that states that windows\system32\vcruntime140.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times with the same result.

I would never download LibreOffice from the M-Store.

Get LibreOffice directly from the source:

https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/

Installation instructions

If you have any problems with the installation LibreOffice in W10, you can read the usual causes here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq/General/General_Installation_Issues_(Windows)

I hope it helps you, good luck!

@Hrbrgr fyi: OP stated that his new laptop comes with Windows 10 S. This special S release of Windows 10 does only allow for apps from Microsoft Store. Windows 10 S won’t allow installation from other sources unless you remove the secure mode, which never can be restored (not aware of any other side effects and license issues).

@jws22 - The title of your question is quite misleading, since the error message you get (windows\system32\vcruntime140.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error.) is not about a bad image of soffice.exe but an improper Visual C++ runtime library.

See e.g https://geeksadvice.com/fix-vcruntime140-dll-is-missing-error-on-windows/ various methods on how to fix problems with Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015 (The net will provide many more).

Is “LibreOffice Vanilla from the Microsoft Store” this one from CIB? The question seems to imply a packaging problem (AFAICT apps from store cannot install anything into Windows folder; so if it relies on optional MSVCRT there, the packaging is not correct). Please file a bug to CIB about that.

Pinging @thb.

Any chance to get me a screenshot of that error message? This sound odd indeed, the Windows Store package FWICT only references the vc runtime as a requirement, and is not shipping it. Use LibreOffice powered by CIB – quelloffen & kostengünstig or https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/ for reporting further details.

@anon73440385, upps. This is truly called customer loyalty.

@mike Kaganski. Yes that is the one.
@thb. I just filed a bug at the first link you sent with the exact text of the error message

"soffice.exe - Bad Image

C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\VCRUNTIME140.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error status 0xc0e90002"

Thanks in advance for all the help.
