Spell check does not function

I have installed LibreOffice Ver. 4.2.3.3 and the spelling dictionary (English-Australian) doesn’t flag any errors.
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with xp emulation
Quad processor with 8 Gb of memory
Under: Language Settings Language,
Locale Setting is English (Australian)
Default language for documents I can see “ABC” with a tick next to:
German (Germany)
and
Italian (Italy)
as I want to use the Writer with three different languages:

1. English
2. German
3. Italian
   As I am totally new to this package, any advice would be welcome.
