Spell Checking Failure

I am having trouble getting the spell checker to work. I have used Tools->Options – Languages and Writing Aids to define the features I want. I then use ‘abc ’ button which brings up the GUI that I have attached. This has in the title bar Spelling: [None]. The pull down menu for the Text Language says [None]. I have tried selecting English (UK). This stays as the selection in the pull down menu but nothing else appears in for example the Not in dictionary window. If I leave this GUI and use the abc ’ button again, the Text Language pull down menu gives [None] again.
What do I now have to do to get spelling etc working?

Have you changed Default Paragraph Style in any way?

Is “English, OED spelling (UK)” a separate independent language from the en group? Although I have the English language pack installed, I can’t find it. How did you configure it?

Language [None] means do not spell check. If that is what the spell check tool displays then you have set the language of your document to None (do not spell check).

If this document is in all one language, e.g. English UK, you could, in the menu, click Tools > Language > For All Text > English UK, otherwise select those portions in one language and set the selection for those to that language and repeat for others. You can also make a selection and then right-click the bar at the bottom of the window where it gives the language, in your case None, and choose the language you want there.

You need to set the default language for your documents. You can set the default in Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages > Default Languages for documents , select your preferred language, for example English UK (make sure it has an icon like ab✓ next to it to show it has a dictionary installed), OK out.

Ok. Ignore the explanation of the first paragraph. The rest of my answer still applies. Cheers, Al

BTW xof refers to the currency of eight independent African states. Better to test with a known incorrect word like breif or recceive.

Thank you for all the comments.
First I tried selecting text. This is what I found. (I saw the comment about adding a ! but could not see where to put this)

The picture shows English, OED spelling (UK) but the error of xof instead of fox was not shown.

The next picture shows the entries in the Options → Language Settings - Languages. This gives for Western English (UK) with an 'ab and in front of it.

The next picture shows what I found via the Tools > Extension Manager. The dictionaries seem to be loaded.

I then opened a new document and wrote some correctly spelt text. F7 brought up the Spelling dialog with [None] in the Text language pulldown menu. I then wrote some misspelt text and used F7. The Spelling dialog was exactly the same.

I hope I have done that was suggested. So far it all seems a bit odd so if I would be pleased to hear of any more ideas.
