Spreadsheet cell editing / enhancement request

Hi,

I would like to suggest a small popup window to edit cell directly in LibreOffice Calc

Actually this “inline” editor hides cells under and around it which is most of the time irritating.
It’s been that way for a long time now.
The best workaround I found in forums is to change the format of the cell (font size / alignment).
Once done, you really don’t want to mess with formatting.
I really like the way we can change cell references quickly by dragging them which is not available in the bar.
A small popup window would allow to see what is underneath (by moving it) and be independent from the cell format.

Any plan to enhance that “main” function ?

Use Writer tables or Base with input forms.

Multiple windows!

Many times the end result you want can be done just by going to WIndow>New Window. Now set your “old” window to about 2/3 of your display and your new window to about 1/3. Windows 11 (or maybe it is PowerToys for Windows; it’s called grouping) will even do this for you if you just drag the title bars to the top of the display then set them in the 2/3:1/3 template positions that pop down. I suspect Linux windowing managers have similar tricks.

If you have the styles panel open you can close it in the new window to see more of the actual spreadsheet. It will stay open in the old window.

Now, just do your in-line editing in the new window and you can still see all of the surrounding cells in the larger window while editing, still with all of the inline editing goodness.

If you need to reference something far away, just do the inline editing in the big window.

Bonus:

You can even click into the old window and press Ctrl+` (that’s below ESC on US keyboard) and reveal the formulas on that window while the results of the formulas still show on the other window. As far as editing complex cell dependencies, that puts a popup window to shame.

Precedent/dependent tracing (Shift+F9 or Shift+F5) will be visible in both windows if you turn it on.

Not bad.
The cell values are now visible (with a cost of a new “huge” permanent floating window).
I can’t yet drag referenced cell hidden under formula.

Can you clarify what you mean by “drag referenced cell hidden under formula”? What do you mean by “draggable”?

When you edit a formula inside a cell, addresses are in colors. Corresponding cells are highlighted with the same colors. Those “referenced” cells can be changed by click and dragging them to a new location to modify the formula.
