If the formula expression were a string, the cell would not show hash marks. Hash marks appear when a formula calculates a number but the output can’t be displayed. Because of the hash marks it is an issue with the view setting.
View>“Higlight Values” [Ctrl+F8] is another indicator. When green, the content is a formula actually. When black, the content is a string.
