Text file has become corrupt since last save, any ideas why?

I’m using a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.8.4.

When I try to open a text document it is now corrupt and showing lines of the following code instead of the original text and images:

###�#Հ##:�"R####�##�#######A�#accH#��P#####################################################################################################################

The file was working fine last night. It was saved as a DOC. file. I’ve tried to change to ODT but it still gives me the same issue.

I’ve installed the latest version of Libre office but this also hasn’t helped.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you save in a pen?

Yeah I had it saved to an external harddrive would this be a factor?

Could be, if it is not properly disconnect from the computer and not all data have been saved to the disk, e.g. data in disk cache. This is a typical issue with pen-drives. I do not know in Mac, but sure there is an option to do a safety disconnect.
