What message do you receive when you are given the choice to either open readonly
or edit a copy
?
Those options are offered when Writer detects a “write protect condition”, or when storage in use is deemed “unsafe”.
“Write protect” could mean that you either have your file on readonly media (e.g. cd/dvd) or some folder you should not use for your documents (Windows system or programs folder). “Unsafe” means a folder where content is “volatile”. This could be your downloads folder, which is typically where “alien material” initially enters your computer, or a temporary storage (any folder with “temp” in the name/path), where content is routinely deleted.
Write protect also is the situation when document is already open. A file typically gets a persistent marking of “open state” when the connection between file and application is broken, e.g. stored on a USB-drive which was disconnected, or power loss, with document open in Writer.
