The LibreOffice configuration has been changed. Select the Java runtime environment

Today, after launching LO writer, I get this screen:

I can go ahead and select the JDK path, but I wonder what could have caused this to happen? Haven’t changed any JDK, haven’t reinstalled, removed or anything alike. Basically, I’ve touched neither Java, nor LO, nor OS update. It’s just started out of the blue. Can I find out what could be the reason? Also, how would I know which Java version fits my LO version?

Thanks.

It was Update Tuesday for Windows yesterday/today

Could you please elaborate a bit? What was “Update Tuesday”? Did something updated remotely (on LO servers or wherever) and that caused any changes in my local installation? Didn’t get it.

Every second Tuesday of the month, Microsoft releases updates for Windows. These get automatically downloaded and installed but until the computer is rebooted the operating system (and hence programs relying on it) can be in an uncertain state. Close everything and click Start menu > Power > Restart (Not Power off), you might need to do it a second time if it downloads more updates after restart.

Ah… you’re talking about standard Windows updates. I’ve not restarted, nor updated anything these days… especially, I’ve not changed anything with Java/JDK. Just only one security patch update was waiting for the restart, and now I have done that restart, as well. Completed update. But it’s still the same window showing up. I don’t think that security patch have caused JDK replacement/removal.

JDK or JRE?

How to install Java (JRE/JDK) so that LibreOffice could use it?

As you are on Windows then LibreOffice might be updating automatically. Click Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Online Update and untick Enable automatic update to disable.

LO never updates automatically. At most, it can download an update automatically, but even that is turned off by default (which I haven’t changed).

As of LibreOffice version 24.8, automatic updates are enabled, see ReleaseNotes/24.8 - The Document Foundation Wiki

@EarnestAl thanks, indeed it’s changed. I’ll consider that. Thanks, again.

@Hrbrgr JDK. JRE is not shipped anymore as a standalone bundle, I guess from 11th version.

My guess is “No, you can’t.” but currently you are the only one who could try.

Good old censored modern “consider perhaps to read the docs, if that’s not wasting to much valuable time” :

  • use a java for your (unknown) OS
  • most of us use a 64-bit LibreOffice, so it will need also the 64bit Java. If you installed the 32-bit version of LO you need to install 32 bit Java. (If in doubt: You can install both, it does not hurt.)
  • Some users should keep an eye not to mix x86 and ARM/m1-versions. Both need to be the same. Windows on ARM will have the same “problem”
-No problem of “fits my LO+version”, but keep an eye on the licensing, if you use Oracles Java in professional environment.

@Wanderer first and foremost: MYFL, it wound stand for mind your * language, the same word you used above. It’s mind-blowing how can some dare to be so blatantly vulgar and impolite, with someone they don’t even know. Secondly: my question was not about architecture of Java build, but about its version.

Problem is solved. Be respectful to others and mind the language. There’s nothing big you’re teaching us here while us being uncapable of grasping it.

Read The Fine Manual?

Good idea. As english is not my first language I take that as “historic acronym” without deciphering every letter.
But I changed language for the faint-hearted ones.

Yes I’ve noticed there was nothing round. But as the question had no references to Windows then, the next user who might stumble on this thread using some search-site may use another OS. (SOme still seem to have more problems in this area.)
.
If the TO would have been more specific on his/her/??? details I’d kept to the questioned system.

As someone wrote “LO never updates automatically” I assumed the TO has an older install. And I’m sure you remember there were 32bit installs available for Windows on the main download page…
Actually I see a x86 folder in the archive even now:
https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/25.8.3.2/win/

I have not even started with architecture of Jav, I just translated your “version” to common problems other users had with Java and LibreOffice.
.
If one narrows down version to only version-numbers there were two obvious answers, so I choose not to mention them:

  • the same version as before would be my first try
  • latest is the next I’d use, unless there are other informations to consider.

better practice would be to add a “windows” tag.

I cleaned mine, so that leaves yours.

Feel free to do so. It is not complicated…
