To limit number of characters in a field

I need to insert a chapter name as a field (Insert > Field > Cross-references > Type=Headings > InsertReferenceTo=Reference) and limit the width of this field to some extend.

For example, to 5 centimeters or maybe 20 characters. Is it possible to do it somehow?

By the way, I suspect this can be achieved by using frames. I don’t want to use frames for this.
