Today updated to Libre Office 24.2 to escape bug in 7.6, it is a little bit complicated, possibly I unintentionally broke 7.6?

Thank you for the wonderful LibreOffice package I have been using it at home for several years.

A year or two ago I was using Libre Office Writer and Calc at home with Windows 10 on a Dell desktop PC and things seemed OK, except for a strange bug in Writer that arrived unexpectedly, when I asked for a new writer document the system attempted to give it but took a very long time until the default blank page appeared, perhaps several minutes, and this was a source of frustration, but I wanted to stay with Libre Office so I found workarounds to avoid ever asking for a new blank document. Eventually I got tired of the workarounds so I began to see if I could find the cause and began to “look under the hood” of Writer. I noticed some anonymous file folders in the master directory of my documents folder, folder names like lutmp that contained multiple lu*tmp files, some sizes tens of MB, some more than 100MB, and I discovered that these related to some large documents that are similar to running blogs that remain open on my desktop all the time and are added to almost every day. I got the idea in my head that these files were the cause of the delayed opening of documents, due to the time needed to access what I presumed to be prior versions of the large work in progress documents.
Secondly I became convinced that the presence of these large documents on the Writer File Menu item “Recent Documents” was also a contributory factor in the delay of opening WP files. I looked for a way to stop the accumulation of recent documents on the Writer File Menu list and began to search the LibreOffice global preferences for things that might be associated with the recent documents facility in some way. I found some items buried in global preferences and began experimenting with changes to settings however I made no notes of the changes I made. I succeeded in eliminating recent documents from the Writer File Menu, or at least I found a way to stop it accumulating documents. But the delayed opening of Writer files and new documents persisted, my efforts had been in vain.
I attempted to address this problem by uninstalling Libre Office and reinstalling a more recent version, unfortunately the global preference that had been set in the prior edition of Writer was replicated exactly in the newly installed edition. I went round this loop of uninstalling and reinstalling more recent version at least two times, possibly three times, always with the same result, delayed file opening and recent documents disabled, both carry over to the new installation automatically.
I wish to have a fully functional version of LibreOffice without the problems of delayed opening and loss of recent documents but I don’t know how to do that, I have run out of ideas, can someone help please?

If they are large then they will slow down LibreOffice especially if you switch to them often as they need to be loaded into memory and then unloaded for the new document.

Windows needs frequent restarts (Start menu > Power > Restart unless FastStart is turned off when power off also works) to keep it fresh.

These are temporary files that LibreOffice creates when you are working on a file; they are deleted on closing of the documents. If the PC crashes they are not deleted and are then used to recover your documents in case of a crash.

Please see this page, LibreOffice user profile - The Document Foundation Wiki. First thing to do is to backup your user profile, just copying it somewhere safe will do.

You can reset settings and user interface, click Help > Restart in Safe mode select Reset settings and user interface modifications then click Apply changes and Restart.

You will lose your customisations (but not templates, macros, etc) however this should fix your issue.

Your loops keep the user profile. This is the way how your settings survive updates of the software. So follow tge advice of @EarnestAl and try with a new profile.
.
If you create a backup of your profile first you may rescue dictionaries, macros or other parts you are missing.

Thank you EarnestAI and Wanderer for your replies, I expect to do as you suggest very soon, maybe tomorrow?
