Track comments - what are the purposes/functions of lines/dotted lines?

Three people inserted their ‘track comments’ on their Word documents but after receiving the email, in my LO Writer document although I can now read their comments by undocking the sidebar, I find it very difficult to know which comments relate to which words/texts in the main body of the Writer document. On the screen the lines and the dotted lines are very close to each other it is virtually impossible to follow them. What are the purposes and functions of those lines and dotted lines?
I do not have MsOffice and I use Windows 10.

Have a look at:

Comments in Writer

The lines link comments with their point of insertion. Only a single line is solid to indicate the “current” comment; all others are dotted.

There are several ways to make a comment “current”.

  • when you hover the mouse over a comment aside the document, this comment becomes “current”
Note that clicking inside the comment does not make it current. The mouse must be within the comment limit.
  • from the docked Navigator, double-clicking a comment makes it current and positions the cursor at its attachment point
  • from the undocked Navigator, double-clicking a comment makes it current but doesn’t transfer the cursor to its attachment point

The dotted/solid lines are visible only when View>Comments is enabled.
