Transitioning to Libre Draw

Won’t even mention what drawing program I’m coming from. It was obsolete when I borrowed a copy upon retiring 20 years ago. But it’s gotten too long of tooth. Most of my application is simple geometric drawing (no 3D, photos, etc.). Now reading the Draw Guide and working the app at the same time. Some questions . . .
On a new drawing Page (will probably never do multi-page) I added 2 new layers. If I put a box on layer 4, I can move/edit there, as expected. But if I go to layer 5 I can Still edit/move it. Don’t expect that to happen. If I delete layer 4, the box disappears (as expected). So it’s really on layer 4, but I don’t expect to be able to access it from other layers. What am I missing?
TIA

Yeah, that takes a little getting used to.

With a right-click on a layer you have the possibility to choose “Modify Layer” in the context menu. The dialog “Modify Layer” opens. With a check mark at “Locked”, you prevent that this layer can be accessed.
And as you can see you also have the possibility to determine if the layer can be printed and if it should be visible.
