Two Base 25.2 upgrade questions

  1. If I upgrade from 24.8.4.2 to 25.2, and for some reason it does not go well, how, and how readily, can I back out the upgrade and revert to 24.8?

  2. I maintain a shared .ODB database. If I make updates to the DB with Base 25.2, will it cause any problems for other maintainers who are back-level? (I don’t know their exact levels at the moment.)

Windows 11 Pro 64-bit. (The other maintainers are predominantly on MacOS.)

Thanks,
Charles

You can download and install any previous version of LibreOffice
(If the version you have installed is from the Microsoft store, the best thing is that the uninsal it)

Do you mean that the best thing is that there is some sort of uninstall process? And that is not true if you download it from the LibreOffice site?

Charles

In Windows (from Windows 10) there are two ways to install the programs:
1.- Through the Microsoft Application Store
2.- Ddownloading a program of the official website (preferably) of the program

  • The process of updating the installed programs Mendiant the application store generally controls Windows and it is possible that the program will be updated even if you do not want
  • The LibreOffice update process downloaded from its official website can be controlled yourself.

That is why if you install the program through the download and execution of the installation program it is more advisable than using the Microsoft store

  • Generally all the programs installed in Windows usually bring their uninstaller, have been installed from the store or from an installation program.

Usually your user profile is not changed by updates itself and also your actual files are not touched. So there is not much danger to try out a new version. Especially on downgrades I usually uninstall first, then re-install the older version. I always keep the installers archived, so I can re-use them, when needed. Otherwise use the archive-link already given by @bantoniof
.
In any case backups of your files and the user-profile (for Windows below %APPDATA% ) are always recommended!

Generally: Check release notes, if any changes are mentioned. Especially for Base I don’t expect problems here, but you didn’t tell what type of database you use. For embedded darabases the data is IN the .odb, for others like my dbase, sqlite and MariaDB data is at a different place safe from changes in the .odb.
.
Two things should be avoided/tested before using.

  • ODF 1.3 files, if you need to include users of OpenOffice (they will see abwarning then)
  • Newer encryption can’t be read by older versions. As the older versions can’t decode they tell (wrongly) the file is corrupted.
    .
If “shared” means opened by more than one user at a time you have other problems to solve, as this is not intended use…

Thanks much!
