use of password to log in

can i password protect my word document?

If by “word document” you mean a document created by M$ Word (extension .doc(x)), I wouldn’t recommend to add password protection. You’re entering the dangerous realm of compatibility. I am not sure at all about the degree of reliability of the feature.

For native documents, i.e. extension .odt, it is very easy to do either at save time or any time while editing:

  • File>Save As and tick Save with password
  • modify File>Properties, Security tab

Be aware that the used cryptography is very strong and it is impossible to recover lost password. For a discussion about this, read https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/145716/i-forgot-my-password-to-a-very-important-document-please-please-help-ill-get-fired/

PS: when asking here, always mention OS name, LO version and save format due to differences between platforms, unsynchronised update rhythm and compatibility issues.
