User-defined Index Errors: 1 entry/page, gray page

I am trying to set up a user-defined index within Writer for outstanding stories within a large family history book I am writing. User-defined indexes used to work earlier, but now I get some bad output when my index generates:

  • One entry per PAGE

  • Entire page is gray.

  • I can’t control this. It doesn’t seem to be able to be changed.

I saw another reference to this problem dated 2014(!), and they called it a bug. Is this not fixed yet? Is there a known way to work around this problem?

Other things I am trying: This document is going to be published as an E-book, so I have pulled out the page numbers out of the Index output, by selecting and deleting the # sign in define index structure tab.

How can I get this index to work?

Dear @Zoomiest ,

unfortunately, your information is somewhat vague and imprecise.
It is impossible to isolate a problem with this information.

If you want to try to get to the bottom of the matter, here are the FAQ on the subject of the index:

Index / Table of Contents / Alphabetical Index / Bibliography

Here is the general documentation:

English documentation | LibreOffice Documentation - Your documentation for LibreOffice

and the Online-help:

The LibreOffice Help Window

If you still need help, you should upload a sample file (reduced, anonymized) with the problem here.
Then also name your operating system and the LibreOffice version.

To upload, please edit your initial question (click on the three dots below the question and then on the pencil) and use the upload icon.

Thanks

With only this vague description, here are some clues:

  • one entry per page: look at the Text Flow tab of the paragraph style used to format the entries. There is likely a forced page break there
  • entire page is gray: this means contents is auto-generated (not resulting from user’s direct entry); therefore standard behaviour
  • I can’t control …: look at the used styles
