Very frequent hangs on new computer

I have been using LibreOffice for years and it has generally been quite stable. I just got a new computer (a Lenovo running Windows 11) and installed LibreOffice 24.8. LO works fine when it’s up, but crashes about every half-hour or less, during which I have mostly been doing other things. In almost all cases, the failure is that it becomes nonresponsive; once it said that it was crashing and would save my files. I have a few Writer files and a few Calc files open, none of which has anything particularly complex. I am not always in the same file when it fails. So far, I have not seen any issues with any other programs or features. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Version: 24.8.2.1 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 0f794b6e29741098670a3b95d60478a65d05ef13
CPU threads: 8; OS: Windows 11 X86_64 (10.0 build 22631); UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win
Locale: en-US (en_US); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

Please test in safe mode, Menu/Help/Restart in Safe Mode

You could open Control Panel, double click Programs and Features, then right click LibreOffice and select Repair.

Maybe add LibreOffice to the Allowed list in your anti virus program. It is actually soffice.bin that you should add.

After working with other programs, especially games, give LibreOffice a little time to respond as it might not have enough resources to open. The other programs might have to release some memory first.

Use Task Manager to see what resources different programs take, it might help point the way.

I appreciate the suggestions. I figured out what was causing the problem. It’s pretty bizarre. When I make a copy of a .odt file from within File Explorer while LibreOffice, it causes LO to become unstable. I’ve changed my routine to instead open the original file inside LO and do File>Save As and have had no further problems.

My guess is that when you create a file in Explorer under Windows 11, it sends an event to the registered app and that LO is not prepared for it. If someone else with Win 11 can try this out, we can determine whether it is a bug to report or if I’m just unlucky.

I tried making a copy of a PDF file the same way and, as expected, it had no impact on LO.

While the file is open in LibreOffice? While LibreOffice is open but the file is closed?

Might be something to do with antivirus putting a hold on the file while it scans it?

Sometimes, File - Save a copy is the better option as you carry on working on the original file and the copy is available for backup or sharing.
