What does Fit Text in Textbox Size

There is an icon in the Text toolbar that says “Fit Text in Textbox Size” but I cannot find any information on this tool in the LibreOffice Draw Guide or in the Help files.

Can anyone tell me what this tool does and how to use it?

I’m using version 7.4.6.2 (x64) on Windows 11.

If you activate it and create a text frame of a certain size pulling with the mouse, then start typing you see it growing with the text (to keep it readable). If you stop typing and hit Escape, the text is fit into the previously created box. If it is less text than fits into the frame it is enlarged to fit, if it is more text it is shrunk to fit. The fit-to-size property is remembered at the text frame, so when you resize it the text is resized as well.

When I try that all I get is what looks like a blurry bar code.

You entered too much text for the small frame. Note that for one line text is stretched in height while being squeezed in width.

Thank for that additional information. I expected the font size to adjust to the text box frame, not that the text would be stretched and squeezed. That seems like a strange feature. Is there a practical use for it?

Enter little text in a big frame and see.

Thanks. I now see how it works. But it seems its use is quite limited and there are others ways to achieve the same or better results.
