What is a Code @

What is code @ and what does it do?
I’ve run into it but don’t know what to do or what it means.
Is there a Libre-Calc 101? I’m just trying to figure out how to move data and do very basic things.

What context? Run into where? Doing what? Number format code? Of the Text format? Would be the place holder of the text to be displayed.

Number format code @ turns off all interpretation of cell input without affecting any values that may be in the cell already.
If you enter the =SUM(A1:A10) into a cell with number format code @ you just get this literal text of 12 characters.
Entering 0012345 you just get the literal text consisting of 7 digits. The cell won’t have any numeric value.

I found where I ran into the @ symbol. After two days of trying to figure out how to ask a question I couldn’t remember where I ran into it - it was in Format, Cells, in the Text option.
So if I select Text, the @ will be the given format code?
But if I select Date, Time or another option, they will have their own code instead of @?

I see there are a lot of YouTube videos, is there a tutorial?

Any Excel tutorial of the past 30 years will do. I don’t consider the number format @ as a number format at all. It is more like a switch to turn off all interpretation of input. With this “number” format, anything you enter is treated as literal text. It is not recognized as a number, date, time, currency value, percent value even if you type it like that.

For the basics any text on Excel could usually used also for Calc…

Well, it’s a text format … if the format code is "before "@" after" then the output for string will be
before string after

Also, if used in a trailing subformat it specifies the display string if data is text instead of numeric, like
General;"Text: "@
displays numeric as numbers and a text string as Text: string

Thanks to you and Villeroy. There are many similarities to Excel, but I still can’t consistently drag-and-drop a cell, so I concluded there are significant differences.

Also, sometimes the cursor ‘marches’ across the screen deleting everything in it’s path! Fortunately it ‘marches’ slowly so if I’m paying attention it doesn’t delete too much.

When someone answers a question on this ASK page, is it polite to thank them or is that an unnecessary use of space and electrons?
There really should be a simple, simple, simple, Help page for the newbys that don’t know how this works. I was so frustrated with the problem and not knowing how to find help after trying for two days. And I’m not the only one.

Excel: Grab the cell border
Calc: Highlight the cell and grab anywhere. Ctrl+Click highlights a single cell.
I prefer cut and paste.

You can if you want, or just click the heart icon to like a post.

I tried to do that but it is totally random. About half the time it works. I read something about drag out of the cell and back in. And it’s different if you’re dragging one cell or multiple cells. I’ll play around with it more.
Thanks.

It might be easier to think of always dragging a range of cells. For one cell, that means click and hold to select neighbouring cell as well and, still holding, go back so just the original cell is selected. Release, then click and hold to drag to desired position
