When is the next version coming out? The word count feature doesnt work unless you use select all.

I have no problem with 5.2 and Linux Mint 17.3. I can view the word count either:

(1) on the Status Bar ( View > Status Bar) to turn it on or off.

(2) File > Properties > Statistics.

(3) Tools > Word Count

Which options are you using, with what version and operating system?
